Based on the number of foot injuries, footwear is a problem that
needs to be addressed. We struggle to keep our employees in proper
footwear due in part to new trends and more comfortable (unsafe)
alternatives. Proper footwear is defined as sturdy, leather, well-built
shoes in good condition. Proper footwear should protect the ankle
and have a slip-resistant sole, as well as have a sturdy top to protect
the toes. Shoes that meet all of these criteria will protect feet best
against the obstacles we face each day in the operation.

Safety Tip:
Accidents and injuries can have
serious consequences, both
physically and mentally. Staying
vigilant and knowing safe work
practices can prevent the
likeliness of injury due to human
error. In a 2021-2022 study including 1DA and 2DA ramp employees, there were
103 total injuries. These injuries were recorded during the employees' first
90 days on the job. The factors contributing to this total were: contact
with equipment, body exertions, slip and falls, and injury from moving
vehicles. Out of the data recorded, the most prominent injury was caused
by contact with equipment. The location of these injuries was primarily on
the foot. One way that these types of injuries can be prevented is proper
training in how to safely operate equipment on the ramp.
